North American overkill continued?

چکیده

Fiedel and Haynes misrepresent many of the arguments we have made concerning the overkill hypothesis. We clarify some of these mischaracterizations and call attention to some of the factual and logical errors in their paper. 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A requiem for North American overkill

The argument that human hunters were responsible for the extinction of a wide variety of large Pleistocene mammals emerged in western Europe during the 1860s, alongside the recognition that people had coexisted with those mammals. Today, the overkill position is rejected for western Europe but lives on in Australia and North America. The survival of this hypothesis is due almost entirely to Pau...

A premature burial: comments on Grayson and Meltzer’s “Requiem for overkill”

In a recent JAS article (“A requiem for North American overkill”), Donald Grayson and David Meltzer [39] attack Paul Martin’s “overkill” hypothesis that humans caused America’s Terminal Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions. This is one of three similar recent articles by these authors [37–39] in which, by scrupulous evaluation of the archaeological record, they have reduced the list of unambiguou...

A"Quasi-Rapid"Extinction Population Dynamics and Mammoths Overkill

In this work we suggest and consider an original, simple mathematical model of a ”quasirapid” extinction population dynamics. It describes a decrease and final extinction of the population of one prey species by a ”quasi-rapid” interaction with one predator species with increasing population. This ”quasi-rapid” interaction means ecologically that prey species behaves practically quite passively...

A multispecies overkill simulation of the end-Pleistocene megafaunal mass extinction.

A computer simulation of North American end-Pleistocene human and large herbivore population dynamics correctly predicts the extinction or survival of 32 out of 41 prey species. Slow human population growth rates, random hunting, and low maximum hunting effort are assumed; additional parameters are based on published values. Predictions are close to observed values for overall extinction rates,...

Restoring America's big, wild animals.

ered on a ranch in New Mexico to ponder a bold plan. The scientists, trained in a variety of disciplines, ranged from the grand old men of the field to those of us earlier in our careers. The idea we were mulling over was the reintroduction of large vertebrates—megafauna—to North America. Most of these animals, such as mammoths and cheetahs, died out roughly 13,000 years ago, when humans from E...
